As a childcare provider, have you ever had a parent call and come for an interview, and then you never hear from them again? Do you wonder what you did wrong? Wasn't your house clean enough?
Was it something personal about you that they didn't like? Is there something you can do differently to increase the likelihood that parents will choose your daycare?
Here is a list of some of the reasons some parents have given for NOT choosing a specific child care home.
Parents can use this as a check-list, and a child care providers can use it as a guide to help you to see yourself and your child care home from a parents perspective.
1. The number one reason that a parent may not choose a provider is because the provider seems more interested in the money rather then the child(ren).
2. The children are not offered a wide variety of age appropriate activities and toys.
3. The house or yard is poorly maintained or cluttered.
4. The children are required to stay in one small area of the home.
5. The parent feels the provider cares for too many children.
6. The home smells of cigarette smoke or animals.
7. The provider does not present themselves in a professional manner.
8. The home does not have adequate napping space or equipment.
9. Any pets not properly restrained and/or controlled.
10. The provider has an unfriendly telephone manner.
11. The provider carried on a phone conversation while children cried in the background.
12. The provider lives near a busy street and does not have a fenced in yard.
13. The provider uses inappropriate language around the children.
14. Broken toys or other dangerous items are laying around.
15. The cleanliness of the provider and the children in her care does not meet standards of the perspective parent.
16. The provider does not acknowledge the children during the interview.
17. The inside of the home is dark and dreary.
18. Children are not allowed on the furniture.
19. The contract and policies are not professionally written.
20. The children are left unattended outside.
21. Toys are not visible during the interview.
22. The provider has too many rules for young children.
23. The provider seems inflexible with her schedule.
24. The parents are not allowed to make unannounced visits during child care hours.
25. Other children in the providers care are dirty or have runny noses during the interview.
26. The providers family does not seem supportive of her childcare business.
27. The perspective daycare parent and the provider just didn't click.
28. The providers prices for childcare were too high.
29. Provider could not supply any refrences.
30. The home is unclean and very cluttered.
